The Maldives and Australia have agreed to allow unrestricted direct flights between the two countries following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between their aviation authorities.
Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Mohamed Ameen announced that the agreement removes previous limitations on airline operations, enabling carriers from both countries to operate direct services without restrictions. The move is expected to create new opportunities for tourism, trade and travel.
The MoU was signed on behalf of the Maldives by Maldives Civil Aviation Authority Chairman Abdul Haris, while Australia was represented by Jim Wolf, Assistant Secretary for International Aviation at the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts.
As part of this development, Maldivian Airlines is preparing to launch the first-ever direct flights between Melbourne and Malé, with services expected to begin in May 2026. The new route is anticipated to strengthen tourism links and enhance broader bilateral relations between the two nations.
Authorities say the agreement reflects the close ties between the Maldives and Australia and is a key step in improving air connectivity. It also forms part of the Maldivian government’s wider strategy to expand its international transport network and diversify access to major long-haul markets.
Officials added that increased flight options are expected to support continued growth in the tourism sector while also facilitating stronger trade connections between the two countries.
