President Departs for Umrah as New Police Commissioner Appointed

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed are set to depart for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Monday, 6 April 2026, to perform Umrah, according to the President’s Office.

In a statement, the President’s Office confirmed that the Government of Saudi Arabia will bear all hospitality and related expenses for the President and First Lady during the visit. Preparations for the trip were finalised earlier in February.

This will be President Muizzu’s second Umrah pilgrimage as a guest of the Saudi leadership. In 2024, he and the First Lady also performed Umrah following an invitation from King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, President Muizzu formally appointed Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed as the new Commissioner of the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

The appointment follows the retirement of former Commissioner Ismail Naveen and concludes a competitive selection process involving three senior candidates, including Deputy Commissioner Farhad Fikri and Assistant Commissioner Abdulla Shareef.

Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed brings more than three decades of experience, having joined the police force in 1995. Over the years, he has held several senior roles across both operational and investigative departments, gaining extensive insight into the institution.

He has also undergone professional training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in India. Academically, he holds a Bachelor of Sharia (Honours) and a Master of Sharia from Villa College.

Upon assuming the role, Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed received assurances of full cooperation from the Maldives Police Service and has pledged to prioritise public safety while strengthening trust and confidence in the police force.
