From today onwards foreign employees have been banned for working as cashiers. The hope of many is that this will open jobs for many Maldivians.
The economic ministry stated that the 74 percent of the current cashiers are Maldivians and the remaining 26 are foreigners.
About 40 shops were checked today and all of them were Maldivians. Most probably Maldivians who do not know Dhivehi.
When asked when the Maldivian cashiers will come they say in broken Dhivehi , “Do not know. Cashier come later. Cashier go out.”
At about 11:00 had to enter café. The cashier was a foreigner. When asked regarding is boss he said that he will not be coming.
When asked whether he knew that the government bans from foreign employees from working as cashiers, he said that “no problem. Boss problem.”
