Dhiggaru constituency MP Ahmed Nazim has been sentenced to life in jail by the Supreme Court on charges of four counts of fraud and deception.
Nazim who was a close partner of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was charged under allegations that Nameera Company - in which he holds a share - had succeeded four state projects by filing fraud documents.
The charges were absolved from him during the trail at the Criminal Court and High Court and he was declared innocent.
The verdict was appealed at the Supreme Court and accepted by the court, much later than the usual window given to appeal any verdict.
Nazim, who was a close ally of President Yameen, and is also a Parliamentary Group member in the pro-government party PPM; although he has withdrawn from direct PPM activities following President Yameen's rise to power.
With the prison sentence Nazim will lose his seat at the Peoples’ Majlis.
