Minister of Foreign Affairs Dunya Maumoon has departed for Geneva to attend the Maldives’ review under the Second Cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) scheduled to take place on 6 May 2015.

The Maldives delegation to the UPR review is headed by Minister Dunya and she is accompanied by the Foreign Secretary Ali Naseer Mohamed, Legal Affairs Secretary at the President’s Office Ms. Aishath Bisham and Assistant Attorney General Mr. Ismail Wisham, This is the second review of the Maldives by the Human Rights Council. The first review was held in 2010.

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a unique process which involves a review of the human rights situation of all UN Member States.

The UPR is a State-driven process, under the auspices of the Human Rights Council to which Maldives is a member, which provides the opportunity for each State to declare what actions they have taken to improve the human rights situations in their countries and to fulfil their human rights obligations.
