Arrest warrant issued to apprehend Ameen was made based on false info- Lawyer

Ahmed Shafeeg, the lawyer of Jumhooree Party Deputy Leader Ameen Ibrahim has said that the arrest warrant issued by Criminal Court was made based on false information provided by Police.

Ahmed Shafeeq said that if the Police had any evidence then they would have provided those evidences to the Criminal Court to get the arrest warrant.

He said that the Police should provide evidences that Ameen instigated violence during the protest as is accused. However, he noted that the Police have so far failed to provide substantial evidence.

The appeal hearings of Ameen Ibrahim’s 15 day remand period issued by Criminal Court was concluded yesterday.

The Judges bench announced that the hearings of the case had been concluded and that the Court would announce a verdict in the next session of the case. However, the bench had not announced the next date of the hearing. According to reports no journalists were permitted in the court.

Meanwhile, Detainees, lawyers and families of detainees from May Day protest have reported of police brutality and abuse during and after arrest on 1 May.

Police arrested 195 people, including minors, and the leaders of all the main opposition parties.

MDP Chairperson Ali Waheed, Adhaalath Party President Sheikh Imran Abdulla, and Jumhooree Party Deputy Leader Ameen Ibrahim were all arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning, following a court order alleging them of attempting to overthrow the government.

The crackdown by the Yameen regime constitutes one of the biggest mass arrests in the Maldives’ history.

The three political parties put aside their differences and joined forces earlier this year, in response to a wave of anti-democratic actions by the Yameen regime, including the firing of the country’s Chief Justice, harassment of the Elections Commission, and jailing of opposition politicians.
