Minister H.E Thoriq Ibrahim has calledon the developed countries partners to ensure sustained, predictable and adequate finance for technological transfer and capacity building in developing countries for a successful agreement in Paris. In addition to this, minister reaffirmed AOSIS and Maldives position and urged global leaders for a fair, balanced and ambitious global agreement in Paris by the end of this year. Minister made this call at the sixth Petersberg Climate Dialogue which is currently underway in Berlin, Germany.
In his statement Minister Thoriq reiterated the vulnerability of small island states on climate change effects and urgency of robust actions. He also highlighted that a comprehensive, balanced and ambitious global climate agreement in Paris will be the best possible pathway where we can achieve the future we all want. Failurein achieving this may result in undermining the credibility of the agreement, which would lead to lack of implementation and enforcement of the agreement.
Minister emphasized on the significance of creating a favorable environment in terms of economic, political and technological circumstances in realizing the agreement during its lifetime. In this notion, Minister clearly raisedthe risks associated with 2 degrees of warming to small islanders and low lying countries. He urged that the underlying goal of maintaining a world with less than 2 degrees warming, and common but differentiated responsibilities with respective capabilities needs to be reflected in the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions.
Minister recognized the importance of acceleration of implementing policy options and good practices with high mitigation potential with nationally determined development priorities, keeping in mind our Pre-2020 mitigation gap that needs to be achieved.
Approximately, 35 Ministers from all the regions of the world are participating in the dialogue. The participants of this Dialouge includes German Chancellor Her Excellency Angela Merkel and French President H. E François Hollande. The aim of the Sixth Petersberg Climate Dialogue is to strengthen the political momentum well ahead of the 21stConference of the Parties that is to be held by the end of this year in Paris. The Maldives delegation to this Dialogue is led by the Minister Thoriq and who is currently also the Chair of the AOSIS. He is assisted by the Chief Negotiator of AOSIS, Mr. Amjad Abdulla and senior officials of Ministry of Environment and Energy. The three day dialogue is expected to be concluded today.
