Minister Mr.Thoriq Ibrahim launched the first National Dialogue on Intended Nationally Determined Contributions, started today at STELCO. In the opening remarks Minister highlighted on the growing concerns with regards to the negative impacts of climate change, particularly to vulnerable countries such as Maldives.
In addition to that, Minister noted that the significance of INDC to the upcoming agreement in Paris which is to be endorsed by the end of this year.
He further called on the participants to steer our INDC in such a way to ensure sustained, predictable and adequate finance for technological transfer and capacity building in developing countries for a successful agreement in Paris.
Minister emphasized on the significance of creating a favorable environment in terms of economic, political and technological circumstances in realizing the agreement during its lifetime. In this notion, Minister clearly raised the risks associated with 2 degrees of warming to small islanders and low lying countries.
He also urged that the underlying goals of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change needs to be reflected in the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions.
This is first dialogue undertaken in the Maldives. Series of such dialogue to enable effective stakeholder engagement in the INDC process are to be held in the future by the Ministry.
