Former Defense Minister Mohamed Nazim has been sent back to prison following his arrival to Maldives.
According to his family, Immigration officials were waiting for him during his arrival at the airport at about 11:50 am.
Correctional Service later took the former Defence Minister to custody and escorted him to K. Himmafushi prison.
Former Defence Minister Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim was sentenced to 11 years in prison after he was found guilty of importing and harboring weapons.
Charges were pressed against Nazim after police during a raid on his residence on January 18 confiscated a 9mm pistol, three bullets, magazine, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and an incriminating pendrive. State prosecutors had said during trial that the information retrieved from the pendrive proved Nazim had planned attacks on key state officials including President Abdulla Yameen, Tourism Minister Ahmed Adheeb and Police Commissioner Hussein Waheed.
Nazim was given a 45-day leave for medical treatment and left for Lanka on the 10th of last month. Maldives Correctional Service had previously requested Nazim to return from his medical leave before the 45-day deadline was over. But the family had said that he will come back after the 45 days and that he is not the type of person to flee.
The case has been appealed to the High Court, and although they had accepted the case, they have not yet scheduled a hearing.
Nazim’s legal team said last night that the head of his legal team in the appeal hearings will be former Attorney General Husnu Suood.
Maumoon Hameed, the leading attorney of the legal team expressed hopes that Nazim will win the case in the High Court appeal phase.
