The Parliament regulations has been amended so that the in the event the motion to remove Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed from his position was filed to the Parliament, the motion would be submitted to the Parliament floor, instead of the Parliament Committees.
Presently, the Constitution states that the issue must be filed in a Parliament Committee. Additionally, there are many procedures must be completed along with the process. However, a change to clause 172 subsection (i) passed by the General Committee of the Parliament last night dictates that the motion must go through the Parliament floor instead of the usual route of the Committees.
Even though this motion had been passed, the Constitution still mandates that the Vice President should be given a two week notice. Additionally, the issue must be debated in the Parliament for two hours. However, in the event a no confidence motion was filed against the President, the procedures would not be changed. The amended regulations had only concerned the Vice President.
Due to this amendment, the motion would be speeded up in the Parliament floor. Under previous procedures, the Parliament should compile an 11 member Committee to investigate the issue and find evidence for each and every claim made against the Vice President.
At the time of the amendment, ruling PPM had passed to undertake a no confidence motion against the Vice President and had begun to take required signatories for such a motion. Government allied MPs have claimed that they would instate Tourism Minister Ahmed Adeeb as the next Vice President.
