Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has been impeached from his position with an overwhelming majority of the Parliament voting in favor of the motion.
A total of 78 MPs voted in favor of the motion, while two voted against the motion. Eighty MPs took part in the vote. The two MPs who voted against the motion had defended VP Dr. Jameel in the debate session of the motion.
MPs from the ruling PPM had alleged that VP Jameel had attempted to instate a coup in the nation after his election to the position. Some MPs alleged that he had attempted to create a support base amongst the Parliament Members for such a move.
Prior to his appointment as running mate for President Yameen, Dr. Jameel was extremely critical of President Yameen, levelling serious allegations against him.
