New Police unit created to ensure the safety of tourists in Male’
A new unit of the Maldives Police Service has been created in Male’ to ensure the safety and security of the tourists who travel to the Maldives.
The new unit, known as the Tourist Police, was inaugurated this morning in a ceremony held near the No.1 Jetty by the Head of Central Operations Command, Chief Superintendent of Police Ismail Naveen.
In his speech, the Chief Superintendent stated that the work of the new unit would not disrupt the activities of the public and that they would do work to ensure the safety and protection of tourists, adding that this would improve the impression tourists have of the Maldives.
The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Head of Central Operations Command, Abdulla Shareef, Chief Inspector Fathuhulla Waheed of the Male’ City Police, the Head of the Tourist Police, Sub Inspector Ahmed Faseeh and members of the Tourist Police.
Some of the responsibilities of the Tourist Police will include monitoring Tour Guides to ensure that they are conducting themselves in accordance with the rules and regulations set for giving tours in the Maldives.
The Tourist Police will be working near the No.1 Jerry area and the tourist areas of the Chaandhanee Magu in Male’, on the streets near the guesthouses near the beachfront and near the Departure Hall of Ibrahim Nasir International Airport in Hulhule’.
They will be wearing their uniforms and a jacket with “Tourist Police” on the back.
