State Minister of Health, Dunya Maumoon have said that abiding by the recommendations made by the EU council is not a choice but something that must be done.
Dunya said this while retweeting a tweet of James Dauris the British Ambassador to UK. He tweeted today saying that the government must free all political prisoners, and that Maldives must uphold rule of law. He also stated that the EU might impose sanctions if Maldives fails to do it.
After retweeting it Dunya wrote that it is not an option to uphold rule of law and that it should be done for the people of Maldives.
Maldives is in turmoil after the Supreme Court verdict of 1st February which ordered the release of 9 political prisoners and reinstated the 12 MPS. Government announced a state of emergency on 5th February and refused to implement the court order. Chief Justice Abdullah Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed were arrested after announcing the state of emergency. In addition the Supreme Court issued new orders revoking the verdict of 1st February.
International community has been urging to revoke the state of emergency and to implement the Supreme Court verdict of 1st February.
