MP Abdullah Riyaz has been informed that he was arrested under the special authorities given to Police during the state of emergency. He was arrested during yesterday’s protest held to call for the implementation of the Supreme Court verdict of 1st February.
His lawyers say that he has not been informed of what he is suspected of. Abdullah Riyaz and Abdullah Shahid were arrested while they were together. However MP Abdullah Shahid and MP Abdul Latheef are being charged with obstruction of a law enforcement officer.
Police arrested a total of 17 people during the protests and only Abdullah Riyaz was arrested under the authority given during the state of emergency. Many people and lawyers are saying that the state of emergency was announced to arrest specific people and it has been proved from the way police is acting.
Ahmed Mahloof was arrested few minutes after he distributed face masks to protestors and he too was arrested under the special authority. Riyaz and Abdullah Shahid were arrested while they were just sitting near a junction. However the conditions under which they were detained are different. This further proves the claims made by lawyers about the state of emergency.
