Maldives Police Service has changed the procedure on lawyer meetings for people detained by the police.
In a circular issued by Ahmed Nafiz the head of Police Custodial Department, said that they introduced this procedure because they wanted to give equal chances to everyone who requests for lawyers. Under the new procedure, lawyers can meet with the detained people only with a letter from the family of the detained person.
Previously the lawyers were able to meet the detainees without any letter or even without a request from the detainees themselves.
