A team of lawyers have said that, even though the lawyer meetings with detainees are confidential, Maldives Police Service has been recording them and that today is the day it got busted.
Hisaan Hussein said that when she went to meet Chief Justice Abdullah Saeed today she was taken to a large room with large chairs and it was suspicious even then.
“They said that this is something that they arranged because he is the Chief Justice. I told them that all these days he was in a small cell and asked them why all these privileges were given today” said Hisaan.
She said that she was so suspicious that she turned the chair and found a tape recorder stuck to the chair.
Hisaan said that she informed the duty in charge about it and asked to check the chair, but they refused to do it. She said however they agreed that it happened. She said that lawyers can meet detainees after various security checks and that they can only take in a piece of paper and a pen.
In addition she said that the management of Dhoonidhoo wanted to meet the lawyers separately but they refused to do it because they were afraid of being subjected to bodily harm. “Many lawyers saw it and that is why all of us wanted to leave Dhoonidhoo without waiting there” said Hisan.
They said that police should not such things even if they get orders from above and that it is a criminal offence. They said that those who did it shall be held responsible. In addition they said that it is not enough to say that lawyers are blaming the police, and said that it is the senior officials of the police who are ordering them to commit crimes.
Mahfooz Saeed said that the in charge at Dhoonidhoo today, Officer Anees must take responsibility for this.
Meanwhile Spokesperson of Police Ahmed Shifan said that this is something they are saying to ruin the name of the institution.
