Supreme Court to hold a hearing regarding the anti-defection act
Supreme Court of the Maldives has scheduled a hearing regarding the anti-defection act. The hearing will be held on Sunday morning at 11:00 am.

Opposition parties filed a case to the Supreme Court earlier this week saying that the act was unconstitutional and requested the court to review it.

According to the anti defection act, parliament members will lose their seats if they cross floors or are removed from their political parties. However, if an independent member joins a new party that member wont lose the seat. The parliament passed the bill such that it will be applied to incidents starting from 13th July 2017. Hence the 12 MPs who seats were in question will lose their seats.
