Lawyer Thalib have said that he was freed from police detention because a police officer kicked him on the eyes. His eyes were swollen after the attack.
Speaking to the media he said that he was arrested near the national museum at 2:30 am while he was going with someone else. He said that he was arrested and taken into the police vehicle while he was resisting.
Thalib said that he was kicked on the eye by a police officer and then it started swelling. He said that then they took him to the Republic square and asked him why it was swelling and said that it was like that even before and said that no one did anything to him. Thalib said that he was taken to Dhoonidhoo as well on that condition, and then the doctor at Dhoonidhoo asked to take him to Male’ for treatment. He said that he was released after taking him back to Male’.
In addition he said that he was harassed inside the pickup from the moment he was arrested till he was taken to Republic Square.
Meanwhile, former President Nasheed said that gang members were active last night wearing police uniforms. Thalib said that the male officers in the pickup had their faces covered. The people have been requesting the police not to cover their face and to use name tags while on duty because when people face such problems from the police it is difficult to lodge complaints because often the person who did it cannot be identified.
We tried to contact the police regarding this incident however since they did not pick up the phone we could not get anything from them.
