Former Foreign Minister of the Maldives, Dr.Shaheed have stated that Maldives is a signatory to the Optional Protocol to the convention against torture, and other cruel inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
He said that Maldives has also signed the Vienna Convention on the law of treaties and hence Maldives cannot use the national laws as an excuse to violate international treaties.
These protocols were signed during Dr.Shaheed’s tenure as the foreign minister.
