Political commentators in the Maldives are skeptical about the UN delegation in the Maldives. They say that they really do not think that the UN delegation can achieve anything.
The delegation’s primary task is to mediate talks between the government and the opposition.
The main reason for this skeptical view is that, it is believed that the government will not make any concessions.
UN delegation’s visit to Maldives was not a surprise. It was a preplanned visit. The government has detained President Maumoon, Chief Justice and others before they came.
The government did this because the government does not want to make any concessions and to show that to UN as well. UN delegation has been meeting the opposition, lawyers and the civil society. They will meet the government as well.
UN wants the government and the opposition to talk and to solve the current problems in the Maldives. Even other organizations like EU also wants this to happen in the Maldives.
Questionable whether the UN delegation can achieve anything !
