An opposition leader of Maldives has said that Maldives cannot duplicate what was done in the Egyptian presidential election. He said that the opposition will not give that chance.
He said that now also it is too late for the government to congratulate Egyptian President Sissi and that the government is trying to conduct a similar election in the Maldives as well.
“All opposition leaders are in jail or are convicted right ? The difference is the difference between the people of these two countries. Maldivians will not go and stay home like Egyptians did when Sisi threatened them” said the leader.
Egyptian President Sisi won a second term after jailing all the opposition candidates. Only 23 million out of the 60 million eligible voters, voted in the election. The government said that 92% of the people voted for Sisi.
