German Ambassador to Maldives Jörn Rohde have stated that there are rumours that a large airline from Europe plans to halt their summer season flights to Maldives.
He tweeted said that the economy of Maldives will be affected when the number of tourist arrivals decline. He said that this is happening because the number of tourists planning to visit Maldives has decreased because of the political situation in Maldives.
European airlines with scheduled flights to Maldives includes British Airways, Air France, Air Italia and Luftsana Airways. The ambassador said that even though the state of emergency has ended in Maldives, many of the democratic rights are still being withheld and that parliament members are in prison under politically motivated charges. He said that this is the result of that.
He said that the solution is to return to the path of democracy and to work to earn back the good name of Maldives.
“Despite the end of SoE democratic rights remain curtailed as MPs remain jailed on politically motivated prosecutions. The economy and thus the people suffer since tourists continue to stay away. As a consequence...we hear big airline carriers from Europe will suspend their Maldives flight for the summer season.
Solution: Only a return to Democracy will bring back stability and the positive image of the wonderful Maldives now tarnished by the ongoing undermining of democratic rights” Joern Rohde
