Elections Commission have stated that they will publish the voters list of those eligible to vote in the upcoming presidential elections will be published next month. They stated that they are trying to begin the re-registration process in June.
EC member Akram said that the commission is doing the administrative work to prepare for the elections and that they will be able to do it according to the schedule. He said that the voters list will be published in May and the re-registration process will begin in June.
He said that once the voters list is publish, application period to apply for monitors and observers during the election will begin.
According to the constitution of Maldives, the presidential election should be held when it is 30 to 120 days till the end of the term. The presidential term will end in 5 years and the new term begins on 11th November.
Hence, it will be 120 days till the end of the term starting from 14th July. PPM’s candidate for this year’s election is President Yameen. Meanwhile the opposition parties have not decided on a candidate and they plan to come up with one candidate.
