Supreme Court decides not to nullify the amendments brought to Judge’s act
Supreme Court of the Maldives have decided not to nullify the amendments brought to judge’s act by the parliament recently.

According to the amendment, as soon as a judge is convicted of a crime, that judge will lose the position. In addition, if a judge is suspended by JSC regarding a criminal case, the salary and privileges that comes with the office will be suspended as well.

Opposition parties filed a case to the Supreme Court stating that the amendment was passed without the presence of 43 members. However, the Supreme Court ruled that in accordance with the doctrine of necessity, the amendment cannot be nullified.

The case was filed by Ali Hussein, Ibrahim Mohammed Solih and Anara Naeem on behalf of MUO. Long hearings were held regarding this case.

Today’s court session where the verdict was announced, was chaired by Adam Mohammed Abdullah.
