Elections Commission have said that the constitution does not specify a date to begin the presidential term.
Speaking at a press conference held today, the president of the commission, Ahmed Shareef said that 11th November was mentioned in the transitional chapter of the constitution and that it should not be followed now.
Shareef said that the constitution says that the length of one presidential term is 5 years and hence 17th November is the final day of this term because President Yameen took the oath of office on 17th November. Shareef said that there were some difference of opinions among the commission members in making this decision.
Since 1968 November, the presidential term in Maldives began on 11th November. However in 2013 it began on 17th November.
