Ahmed Shareef the president of the Elections Commission of the Maldives have said that EC’s crime might be not allowing anyone to engage in unlawful activities.
Speaking to Miadhu News, Shareef said that the commission is ready to re-check everything regarding the elections and that the EC will welcome to do it as stipulated in the relevant laws.
“Even the ballot boxes can be opened and recounted. Ballot papers can be checked to see if any chemical was used. EC is ready for all these things” said Shareef.
Shareef said that it is not the Commission’s responsibility to prove that they acted in accordance with the law just because some people protested on the streets. “If they believe that we did something unlawful they should go to the court and submit it to other relevant authorities. The Commission is ready to answer. Also if anyone wants to know any information regarding the election they can visit the commission. Commission is ready to clarify everything. However we will not answer to allegations made on the streets. That is not something in our mandate” said Shareef.
Shareef assured that the commission acted in accordance with the law and that they did not do anything to rig the vote. He said that it will be impossible to rig the vote due to the electoral legislations in the Maldives.
