The government has decided to join Commonwealth again. The decision was made in a cabinet meeting held today.
The members of the cabinet noted that membership countries get many opportunities in various fields. Especially scholarships and opportunities in the field of sports.
In addition the ministers noted that the importance of being a commonwealth country to maintain a strong foothold in today’s globalized world. They highlighted the importance of Commonwealth in terms of upholding democratic values and advocating free speech. In addition the ministers also discussed about the benefits the country will get in the work conducted by Maldives with regard to climate change and sustainable development.
Based on the counsel of the cabinet, the President decided to join Commonwealth. The relevant authorities are now doing the administrative work required to re-join Commonwealth.
Maldives joined Commonwealth on 9th July 1982 and left on 13th October 2016.
