Government of the Maldives has decided not to implement death penalty. According to Foreign Ministry, since death penalty has not been implemented in the Maldives for the past 65 years, the government has decided to keep it that way.
Foreign Ministry has decided to vote the resolution of UN on moratorium on the use of death penalty. A vote will be taken on the resolution during the meeting of the Human Rights Commission of UN going on in Geneva. Maldives is represented by Ahmed Naseem, a minister at the President’s Office.
Former Home Minister Umar Naseer expressed concerns regarding this decision of the government. Umar is a strong advocate for the death penalty. Umar said that the solution for gang violence is the death penalty. He said that he will be the first President in the history of Maldives to implement the death penalty.
The last time a person was executed was 65 years ago.
