Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid have said that the government will not allow any foreign country to make a military base in the Maldives. He said that Maldives will never sign an agreement which will undermine the independence and sovereignty of Maldives.
Shahid made this statement during a time when many people are expressing concern after Indian media reported that India is offering one billion dollars to Maldives in exchange for a military base in the Maldives.
“We will get foreign assistance in a way which will not undermine the sovereignty of Maldives” We will not allow any foreign country to make a military base in Maldives and such an agreement will not be made” said Shahid.
