JP’s council member Ahmed Thaufeeq Topy have said that the uncontrolled inflow of immigrants should be stopped and if not, the consequences will be really bad.
He said that the amount of immigrants in Maldives are same as the adult population of the Maldives. He said that this is very dangerous for the country. “We have to see whether we can keep all of them in Maldives. If we do not need that much immigrants then they should be sent back” said Topy.
He further said that there are many immigrant workers in Arab countries but they have a very strong legal framework. He said that such legal mechanisms are non-existent in Maldives and hence things are out of control.
He said that the immigrants in Maldives should marry Maldivians only in accordance with the relevant laws. He said that it is the same in Arab countries as well. “It is a huge problem that they can just get married to a Maldivian so that they can stay in Maldives easily” said Topy.
