President Solih have said that the government aims to develop fish storage plants in the islands and the Fisheries Ministry is working on it.
Speaking at the ceremony held at Ga.Gemanafushi to mark the fishermen’s day, the president said that since many fishermen complain about getting sufficient ice, the government plans to expand the ice plant in the island. He said that the capacity of the plant will be expanded from 25 to 50 tonnes. He also said that the government plans to handover the management of the ice plants in the islands to the island councils.
In addition President Solih said that, within the next 6 months the government will open a special bank to issue loans to fishermen to develop the sector. He encouraged young people to join the industry.
