An official of the Transport Authority said that they had to get the help of Maldives Police Service to implement the regulations of the authority due to the behavior of some taxi drivers.
He said that even though the ministry regulated the price of the taxis, they did not try to enforce it using the police because they thought the taxi drivers will do it on their own.
“But what can we do when a taxi driver abandons a mother and her child on the highway when she complained about being overcharged” said the official.
The official said that the drivers are complaining that sometimes they have to return to the airport from Male’ without a customer. “But sometimes they take 4 people and take 100 Rufiyaa from everyone” said the official.
“If there are 4 different customers then they should take 25 per person right. But they take 100 from each person” said the official.
He further said that the regulations are made to protect the right of both parties and no one should abuse the regulations.
