President of Dhihdhoo council Ali Hashim has resigned from his position. Hashim resigned after the people of the island started signing a petition calling for his resignation.
People of Dhihdhoo suspects Hashim of supporting secular views. Hashim tweeted defending Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra) who made various controversial remarks about Islam on social media.
Speaking to Miadhu News, Ali Hashim said that he resigned because he wanted to respect the view of the people. “I do not support secular views. The media twisted what I said. I even apologized if people misinterpreted what I said. So far I have worked in the spirit of majority. I resigned to remain like that” said Hashim.
Anti-Islamic statements on social media has increased in the past few weeks. Maldives Police Service has also summoned some people regarding the matter. However so far no concrete action has been taken anyone.
