Kulhudhufushi to be given the status of a city

President of the Kulhudhuhfushi council, Ahmed Athif has said that the government as assured him that Kulhudhufushi will be given the status of a city

According Athif, the President Office and the Attorney General’s Office are working together to remove the legal barriers that prevents granting Kulhudhuhfushi the status of a city.

According to the decentralization act of the Maldives, any island with a population of 10,00 or more shall be granted the administrative status of a city. Kulhudhuhfushi reached the population of 10,000 last year. However, the delay in granting the city status to the island is due to some legal barriers.

Kulhudhuhfushi will become the first city north of Male’. At the moment there are three cities in Maldives. The capital Male’ city and Addu and Fuvahmulaku City in the south.
