Foreign Minister Shahid expresses interest to open an embassy in Washington DC

Foreign Minister of the Maldives Abdullah Shahid has expressed interest to open an embassy in Washington DC, the capital of the United States of America. 

Speaking at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the minister stated that the government of Maldives has plans to open an embassy in Washington DC. 

At the moment there is no embassy of Maldives in the US. The Maldivian ambassador to US and Canada is the permanent representative of Maldives to the United Nations who is based in New York.

The current ambassador is Dr.Ali Naseer Mohammed who was appointed by the previous administration. The current administration has appointed Thilmeeza Hussein to the position and she will assume the responsibilities of the position very soon. 

Foreign Minister Shahid is on a 4-day visit to the US where he will meet US government officials and officials of the UN.
