Elections Commission of the Maldives has stated that 264 589 people will be eligible to vote in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
In the last presidential elections, 262 135 people were eligible vote. Hence 2454 people will be newly eligible to vote.
Those interested in contesting for the parliament can start applying starting from 28th January till 26th February. The ruling coalition has still not decided on how to distribute the constituencies among the coalition partners.
MDP, the main ruling party announced that they intend to contest for 86 seats. However JP an dMRM has made a decision on where they want to contest. Adhalath Party the smallest party in the coalition announced that they plan to contest for 13 constituencies.
Meanwhile opposition PPM and newly formed Congress Party announced that the two party intends to work together in the parliamentary elections. So far they have not announced the exact number of seats they plan to contest for.
The parliamentary elections will be held in April 2019 and all Maldivians above the age of 18 are eligible to vote.
