Former Vice President Dr. Mohammed Jameel Ahmed has stated that he will defend the presidential system if anyone tries to change the system of government to a parliamentary system.
Speaking to Avas Hukuru program, he said that those who are trying to change the system should explain why they want to change the system. He said that a change should be brought if there is a problem with the existing system or if they have some other motives.
“They are saying that now it is too corrupt. We have only seen 3 presidents since Maldives adopted the presidential system. It includes their (those who want to change the system) government as well. Isn’t there corruption in countries which practices the parliamentary system as well ? Malaysian PM was ousted as a result of corruption. Pakistan’s Nawaz Shareef was ousted due to corruption. So this is not the problem of the system” said Dr.Jameel.
The former Vice President said that giving an outright majority to those who want to change the system would be very dangerous for the system. He asked whether this is the right time to change the system and bring a prime minister while there are more important national issues that need to be resolved.
