MP Moosa Nizaar the MP for Keyodhoo constituency have stated that if Vaavu Atoll is developed, it could generate enough money to feed the whole country.

Speaking at a ceremony held by Moosa Nizar to launch the development plan of the atoll, he said that while the economy of Maldives depends of fishing and tourism, the oceans around Vaavu Atoll are rich in fish.

He also said that most of the shallow lagoons used to catch baits are also numerous in the atoll. Nizar said that even now, a lot of money from the tourism sector are generated within the atoll and the atoll has a well developed guest house tourism as well.

Nizar noted that the atoll has most of the popular dive points in the Maldives and most tourists who visit Maldives dives in the Maldives. He said that the state earns 2 million Rufiyaa per year just from divers who visit the atoll.

In addition he said that the most beautiful lagoons in the Maldives are in the Maldives and that includes the 58 kilometer long “Foitheyo falhu”. He said that the lagoon can be developed as a world class watersports park. He said that if such a park is developed, the whole nation will benefit from it and it will help to advertise Maldives. Moosa Nizar presented many ideas which could benefit the country.

Nizar said that despite these resources, past governments did not care much about the atoll and hence the islanders have become refugees in their own islands. He said that one island of the atoll has now been deserted as a result.

He said that the biggest reason why people desert the islands are because they do not get access to quality education and healthcare from the islands.

Nizar said that he has submitted his development proposal to the President’s Office and to other relevant offices. He said that so far based on the feedback he is optimistic that the government will help to implement these projects.
