A detention center for illegal migrants has been opened at Hulhumale’ today. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the center, Home Minister Imran noted that the issue if illegal migrants is a huge issue in the Maldives and the matter needs to be resolved as soon as possible.
He said that the government aims to solve this problem and it is one of the main focus areas of the government.
According to the ministry, 40 people can be detained in the detention center and the center will be expanded in the coming months.
Illegal migrants are usually kept in detention centers from 15 days to 1 month.
