Supreme Court launches a roadmap to reform the judiciary

The Supreme Court of the Maldives has launched a roadmap to reform the judiciary. The roadmap was officially launched by Chief Justice Dr.Ahmed Abdullah Didi in a ceremony held last night.

The roadmap contains 20 main areas of focus. Speaking at the ceremony held to launch the roadmap, the judicial administrator Dr.Abdullah Nazeer said that the roadmap was formulated with input from participants of the Judicial Independence and Reform Conference, UNDP, foreign organizations and research conducted on the Maldivian judiciary. 

Important points in the roadmap includes amending the legislation on the judicial service commission, and to strengthening the process of appointing and dismissing judges and establishing a mechanism to hold judges accountable. 

Dr.Nazeer said that the purpose of the roadmap is to ensure free and fair trails and soon they will form an action plan which can be used to implements the goals in the roadmap within 5 years. 

The ceremony was attended by speaker of the parliament Qasim Ibrahim, some cabinet ministers and various judges.
