MALÉ – The United States reaffirms its support for Maldives by delivering 210,600 additional doses of the Pfizer vaccine to help end the pandemic. In partnership with COVAX, UNICEF, and the government of Maldives, the United States is committed to delivering life-saving vaccines and mitigating the pandemic’s effects, particularly as the Omicron variant accelerates throughout Asia.
“As the pandemic enters its third year, we must continue to work together to fight the virus,” said U.S. Embassy Charge d’Affaires Martin Kelly. “The United States is partnering with over 120 countries—including Maldives—to deliver vaccines and reduce the pandemic’s social and economic consequences.”
The United States has worked with Maldives to combat COVID-19 since the earliest days of the pandemic. To date, the U.S. has delivered nearly 440,000 Pfizer vaccines and provided over $7 million in emergency supplies, training, and critical services. The United States provided an in-kind donation of 60 ventilators to the Health Ministry, as well as 100,000 Rapid Diagnostic Tests. Partnering with local organizations, the U.S. helped expand COVID-19-related social protection services and implemented a COVID safety awareness campaign. Additionally, the United States is supporting the government of Maldives’ efforts to develop effective economic, fiscal, and monetary measures to ensure Maldives’ long-term economic recovery.
As part of its commitment to donating 1.2 billion vaccines to partner countries around the world, the United States has delivered over 386 million life-saving vaccine doses to date. With the recent announcement of its Initiative for Global Vaccine Access (Global VAX), the United States has committed more than $1.6 billion to help deliver vaccines around the world.
COVID-19 has introduced vast and overlapping health, humanitarian, and economic crises, and effective global collaboration is critical to help end the pandemic and mitigate its impacts. Today, with the emergence of the new Omicron variant, collaboration is more important than ever.
