Maldives welcomes half a million tourists within 8 days - This is a 16.6 percent increase

Official figures released by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment has shown that the country has welcomed over half a million tourists within the first 8 days of year 2025, reaffirming the island nation’s continued popularity as a world-class travel destination.

According to the latest updates by the Tourism Ministry, up-to 51,952 tourists visited the country within the first 9 days of this year, while the figure recorded last year was 44,557.Hence this year’s arrival figure is a 16.6 percent increase.

With special efforts to further boost Maldivian tourism , total tourist arrivals has reached 1.1 million so far this year, compared to the 1.0 million arrivals recorded last year, which is 9.4 percent increase. 

The country has been receiving an average of 5,772 tourists daily, while last year the figure stood at 4,000. 

According to figures released, the top source markets are China, Russia and the United Kingdom, with new emerging markets showing growth due to enhanced connectivity and promotional campaigns. 154,582 Chinese arrivals were recorded, followed by Russia with 134,356 arrivals. UK comes third with 112,245 arrivals. 72.6 percent of the tourists stayed at resorts while 22.4 percent chose guest houses. 

The government aims to bring 2.3 million tourists this year. So far 1.1 million arrivals have been recorded, which sets a positive tone for the nation’s tourism industry. Officials are confidant reaching this milestone is a strong indicator that the country is on track to meet — and possibly exceed — the set target of 2.3 million.

The country is also set to open the new Airport Passenger Terminal, which is expected to allow further increase in tourist arrivals, with government’s strategic initiatives, combined with global marketing efforts and public-private partnerships.

The government, under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has prioritized tourism development through infrastructure expansion, increased flight connectivity, and diversification of tourism products, including cultural tourism and community-based experiences. And most recently the government has also announced the introduction of Halal Tourism.

The Maldives currently boasts more than 170 resorts, over 900 guesthouses, and dozens of liveaboards, offering diverse experiences for travelers seeking luxury, adventure, and sustainability.

Officials remain confident that 2025 will be a record-breaking year for the tourism sector, further strengthening its role as the backbone of the Maldivian economy.
