The New Terminal at Velana International Airport has been opened with a colorful ceremony

-The new terminal is designed to cater to 7.5 million passengers annually

-The new terminal has 12 aero bridges and 6 self-service counters

 

The Garand opening of the New Terminal at Velana International Airport was held tonight with a colorful program with fireworks display, and some entertainment items. 

The terminal was declared open by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who also addressed the event. 

In his speech the President said he decided to open the new terminal to coincide with the Independence Day today as economic independence is very important in an independence journey of a country, and as airports are the main gateway for economic independence. He also thanked those who financed the project, as well as Heads of previous governments who handled the project before him. 

The highlights of the colorful ceremony included a video report looking into the history of the airport, a theatrical performance also depicting the different phases of development of the airport, a drone and light show. The program culminated with a beautiful fireworks display.

Following the opening the First Couple and other distinguished guests were also given a guided tour of the new terminal.

The new terminal at Velana International airport boast of several modern-day features. Key features of the new terminal include 12 passenger boarding aero bridges, 47 traditional check-in counters, an advanced baggage handling system and 6 self service check-in kiosks. The aero bridges and self-service check-in kiosks are newly introduced in the country at the new terminal.

The new terminal also has 24 separate check-in counters for sea planes.

Compared to the terminal currently being used, the number of immigration counters has been increased to 20, with 6 E-Gates. 

The new terminal, measuring 72,000 square meters is the proud product of a lot of hard work by all the staff of MACL, as well as the contractors. 

Services at the new terminal will first be opened for Maldivian Airlines and will gradually add airlines, going to full operation by September this year.
