President Muizzu Concludes Successful Official Visit to China

His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has returned to Malé following a successful official visit to the People’s Republic of China, undertaken at the invitation of His Excellency President Xi Jinping. The visit marked an important milestone in reinforcing the Maldives–China partnership and advancing multilateral cooperation through the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

During the visit, President Muizzu participated in the SCO Summit 2025, joining other Heads of State and Government at the "SCO Plus" meeting for high-level discussions on regional and global cooperation. On the sidelines of the summit, he also held productive bilateral meetings with world leaders, exploring opportunities to enhance diplomatic ties and expand collaboration across various sectors.

A central highlight of the visit was President Muizzu’s meeting with President Xi Jinping, where both leaders reaffirmed their strong commitment to deepening cooperation and promoting shared development goals.

The trip also saw the signing of eleven key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements between the Maldives and China, covering critical areas such as economic development, capacity building, infrastructure, and renewable energy. These agreements are expected to accelerate national development priorities and unlock new opportunities for sustainable growth.

President Muizzu further attended the Commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People in the Second World War, held at Tiananmen Square, Beijing. The ceremony, presided over by President Xi Jinping alongside China’s top leadership, was attended by several world leaders participating in the SCO Summit. A reception at the Great Hall of the People followed the event, honouring distinguished guests.

In addition, President Muizzu held a key meeting with His Excellency Li Xi, Secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and Member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China, representing President Xi Jinping. Both sides highlighted the importance of strengthening mutual trust, deepening practical cooperation, and working together to promote regional stability. The meeting concluded with a banquet hosted in President Muizzu’s honour, reflecting the warmth of Maldives–China relations.

This was President Muizzu’s second visit to China since assuming office in November 2023, further cementing the historic bonds of friendship between the two nations. The visit not only elevated bilateral ties but also underscored the Maldives’ growing engagement in multilateral forums and its commitment to advancing shared prosperity with international partners.
