The Malaysian architect of the Islamic Centre, Dato’ Hajeedar Abdul Majid, visited the Islamic Centre of the Maldives today, returning to the iconic landmark he designed 40 years ago.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs hosted a special event to honor the distinguished guest. The ceremony was attended by Honorable Faris Maumoon, Vice Chairman of Maumoon Foundation, Honorable Abdullah Kamaluddin.
Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, delivered the keynote speech at the gathering. In his remarks, the Minister extended heartfelt gratitude to Dato’ Hajeedar for his remarkable contribution in designing the Islamic Centre, a masterpiece that harmoniously blends traditional Islamic architecture with modern concepts.
The Minister also paid tribute to the founder of the Centre, His Excellency Al-Usthaaz Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom, former President of the Republic of Maldives, for his visionary leadership in initiating the historic project. He further acknowledged the dedicated team who worked tirelessly to bring the Centre to life.
Highlighting the significance of the Islamic Centre, Minister Shaheem said: “This monumental mosque and centre is much more than a building – it is a light of guidance, a house of knowledge and worship, and the central hub of Islamic administration in our country.”
He added that the Islamic Centre has shaped generations by playing a pivotal role in teaching the Qur’an, spreading Islamic knowledge, and nurturing Islamic culture and civilization.
Calling the architect’s visit a historic moment, Minister Shaheem expressed that many Maldivians had long wished to meet the mastermind behind the Centre’s timeless design. He prayed for Dato’ Hajeedar’s continued health and wellbeing, and thanked him sincerely for his visit.
