President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially commissioned the new water plant established in K. Thulusdhoo, a project developed by the State Electric Company (STELCO) to provide residents with safe and reliable drinking water.
The MVR 50.8 million facility was inaugurated at a special ceremony held in Thulusdhoo on Tuesday. The President was accompanied by Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muthalib, Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, STELCO Managing Director, the Member of Parliament for Thulusdhoo constituency, and the President of Thulusdhoo Island Council.
Work on the Thulusdhoo desalination plant began on 29 December 2021 and was completed and made ready for commissioning on 19 October 2025. The project forms part of the Government’s ongoing efforts to expand access to essential public services across all inhabited islands.
The new facility features two Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants with a production capacity of 200 tonnes each, supported by two RO storage tanks of 1,400-tonne capacity each, and an additional raw water (RW) tank. A 17,336-metre-long pipeline network connects the system directly to households, ensuring a consistent and sustainable supply of safe drinking water for the community.
