Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Special Envoy and Minister of Civil Aviation, Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, has reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting the Maldives in expanding its economy and attracting investors.
Minister Naidu made the remarks while addressing the official opening ceremony of the Hanimaadhoo International Airport on Sunday.
He said the completion of the Hanimaadhoo International Airport project stands not only as a symbol of infrastructure development but also as a testament to the enduring friendship and partnership between India and the Maldives. The Minister also extended his appreciation to the Maldivian Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure for their close cooperation in bringing the project to fruition.
Minister Naidu said the Hanimaadhoo Airport Project reflects the Maldivian government’s dedication to sustainable growth and progress. He noted that the airport’s opening would connect the northern Maldives to the world and play a major role in stimulating the region’s economic expansion.
“As Maldives continues its journey for the expansion of its economy, India stands ready to work hand in hand in expanding trade and investment corridors. Towards this endeavor, we are looking towards an early conclusion of the bilateral free trade agreement and the bilateral investment treaty,” he said.
The Minister also emphasized that a strong and modern transportation network is crucial for comprehensive national development. He said improving air connectivity between the Maldives and India will further strengthen ties between businesses and people in both countries.
Developed by India’s JMC, the Hanimaadhoo International Airport project began in January 2022 with a total investment of USD 136.6 million. The development was completed after three years and marks a significant step forward in the growth of the northern region, representing the collective aspirations of its people.
Hanimaadhoo International Airport features a 2,465-metre runway capable of handling Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s. Its newly constructed apron can accommodate nine aircraft at once — three Airbus planes and six ATRs — and includes a modern cargo terminal and an air traffic control tower.
The 10,380-square-metre terminal building is divided into domestic and international sections, with the first floor serving domestic flights and the upper floors allocated for international operations. Each level features two gates, and notably, Hanimaadhoo Airport is the first atoll airport in the Maldives equipped with an aerobridge.
Designed to reflect the Maldives’ natural charm, the new airport can serve up to 1.3 million passengers annually.
During his visit, Minister Naidu also met with Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel to discuss ways to enhance air connectivity and strengthen cooperation between India and the Maldives across key sectors.
