Comprehensive Transport Overhaul Planned for Greater Malé Region

The government is targeting 2028 to implement long-term solutions to the transportation challenges facing the Greater Malé Region, as part of a broader effort to modernise urban mobility and improve public services.

Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed announced the goal while speaking at the inauguration of the Male’ Taxi Line service in Villimalé, stating that several government agencies are currently working together under the direction of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to address persistent transport-related concerns.

According to the Minister, authorities are undertaking a detailed assessment of issues affecting residents across the Greater Malé area, including traffic congestion, inadequate parking facilities and challenges associated with vehicle registration. He said the findings will form part of a comprehensive transport strategy that will be unveiled to the public at a later stage.

Saeed described the expansion of the Male’ Taxi Line service to Villimalé as another step toward fulfilling the administration’s commitments to improve connectivity and accessibility across the capital region. He emphasised that establishing an efficient and integrated transport network remains one of President Muizzu’s key priorities.

The Minister also pointed to several major development projects currently underway in Villimalé, including housing initiatives and healthcare infrastructure, noting that the island is receiving unprecedented attention under the current administration.

Echoing those remarks, Villimalé MP Mohamed Ismail said residents had long faced difficulties due to a lack of focus on essential services by previous administrations. He stated that since assuming office, President Muizzu has placed particular emphasis on addressing the needs of Villimalé and improving the quality of life for its residents.

The introduction of the taxi service is expected to help ease long-standing transportation difficulties experienced throughout the Greater Malé area, particularly the shortage of taxis during peak hours. Authorities have indicated that the service may be expanded further depending on public demand.

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Managing Director Ahmed Saudhee said the new service will provide residents with greater convenience and flexibility when travelling within Villimalé. Users can access taxis through a mobile application or by contacting a dedicated hotline operating around the clock.

Saudhee also clarified that the launch of the taxi service will not affect existing public bus operations. Bus services will continue to run on their current schedules and routes, while taxis will complement the network by serving locations that are not easily accessible by bus.

The Male’ Taxi Line service, which operates 24 hours a day, was first introduced in Malé and Hulhumalé on April 2. Its expansion to Villimalé marks the latest phase of the government's efforts to strengthen public transportation and build a more connected Greater Malé Region.
