Legal team of former Defence Minister Colonel (retired) Mohamed Nazim has said that Tourism Minister Ahmed Adheeb threatened Nazim on phone a day before the search raid on Nazim’s residence.
Leading attorney from Nazim’s legal team, Maumoon Hameed stated that Nazim complained to President Abdulla Yameen regarding the warning of Adheeb.
When Maumoon Hameed spoke about the matter during the hearing, the Judge stopped him saying that it is not related to the trial.
Minister Adeeb had inquired about the apartment of Nazim two months before the raid of his residence by Maldives Police Service (MPS) on January 18th.
Maumoon added that Adeeb frequently visited his residence, hence him inquiring about the number of bedrooms in the apartment was rather "suspicious."
He also said that Nazim had lodged a complaint with President Abdulla Yameen saying that SWAT officers were behind the cutting down of Areca Nut Palms on the streets of Male', which had then angered Minister Adeeb eventually leading him to threaten Nazim over phone.
Maumoon noted that inside sources revealed that a specific sum has been deposited to the bank accounts of those policemen who had raided the residence of Nazim.
However the judges had stated that these were irrelevant to the case and had not provided the opportunity for such claims. Maumoon had then responded by saying that the case against Nazim is "made up" and that it was necessary to refer to these incidents to prove his innocence.
He had also requested to summon Minister Umar and Minister Adeeb to court to clarify the issue.
