The Government of Japan has provided US$ 201,167(approximately Maldivian Rufiyaa 3 million) grant for ‘The Project for the Construction of Jamaludheen School Building, in Fuvahmulah Island’ under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project scheme(GGP).
‘The Project for the Construction of Jamaludheen School Building, in Fuvahmulah Island’ will be implemented by Madharusathu Sheikh Mohamed Jamaludheen (MJM) School in Fuvahmulah Island. The project aims to construct a suitable school building in realizing children’s right to receive education in a child friendly environment. The project has been developed in cooperation with a Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer (JOCV) attached to Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) who worked at the MJM School as a physical teacher.
Jamaludheen School in Fuvahmulah Island currently accomadates more than 400 students with 12 classrooms, which are used rotation basis. Due to shortage of classrooms, junior and senior students have to share one classroom right now. With this grant of the Government of Japan, MJM School will be able to construct a two–storied building for the school with eight classrooms which could enable in the same time, all the students to study in permanent classrooms with adquate learning facilities.
The Government of Japan has extended assistance to Maldives for over 40 years in various sectors such as fishery, education, communication and broadcasting, electricity, restoration from Tsunami disaster, ranging from grassroots level to large infrastructure lever. Especially in the renewable energy sector, the government of Japan has provided grant funds amounting to approximately USD 12 million (Japanese Yen 1 billion) under the “Project for Clean Energy Promotion in Male” since 2010.
The Principal of MJM School stated that “we are particularly thankful to the government and people of Japan for endowing us with a new annex to our school premises. This new 8 classrooms building has enabled us to re-deploy our rooms and facilities and by so doing we are able to embark on a class expansion plan – class structure will increase to the target number of 20. This is a significant development in view of the starting Secondary School Curriculum in the 2016 school year. In future, schools will need to have a sufficient number of secondary classes so that students can have a more varied choice in their programs. This is also will help to achieve strategic goal of one session schooling as well as that helps to continue in our mission and to assist those in our community. The most desirable structure for ordinary schools will be transforming in secondary school. By conclusion, there are no words I can express for your generous and enthusiastic support; indeed I would like to convey my gratitude and appreciation for the overwhelming support to resolve the lack of classroom facilities. The Grant Contract was signed between His Excellency Mr. Nobuhito Hobo,
Ambassador of Japan and Mrs Arifa Abdul Majeed, Principal, Madharusathu Sheikh Mohamed Jamaludheen (MJM) School, on March 18, 2015 at Ministry of Education in Male.
